Business Development 101

Procrastination is one bad habit that exists in almost every profession today. In fact it has spread to such an extent that specific business development courses and programs are offered nowadays to counter it. This bad habit is extremely costly in the work and business field as even the slightest bit of procrastination can cost an employee his job and incur severe financial penalties on the company.

Business coaches and consultants play a vital role in eliminating procrastination in office environments. Here we will focus on some of the things they do, that help companies achieve maximum work proficiency from their employees. These are very common tips that should be part of every person’s work ethic and companies should encourage these business development strategies.

Business Development Basics – Set Priorities!

Setting priorities is one of the most common ways to tackle procrastination. It essentially creates a broader picture of what needs to be done and how one should go about it. Business coaches focus on encouraging their teams to make a to-do list on a daily basis and abide by it. Write down your day to day work activities and then prioritize them.

Complete Tasks Based on Importance

A very good business development practice that is often stressed is not to leave the hardest or most important task for the last. Instead do it first thing when you are fresh and active early in the day. Putting it off for the last will make it much more difficult than it has to be. It will “become” more difficult and will be more challenging to finish. Another thing to make sure is not to go overboard with your priority list and fill it beyond your capabilities. Keeping it simple just enough so it keeps you busy and helps you finish all your tasks in a timely fashion will suffice.

Don’t Say No, Say Now!

Eliminating procrastination is essentially about a change in a person’s attitude towards life, work, friends and family. It involves finding the courage to avoid saying no and instead saying now. Business coaches greatly encourage their teams to develop this attitude in order to become better workers and even better human beings. Avoid putting off a task for later thinking you will have more than enough time to do it. Instead realize the importance of the time you have available to you right now and make the most of it. Complete your tasks now when you know you have the time.

Procrastination is a bad habit and not all habits go easy. It takes time, effort and in many cases sacrifices. However it is not impossible for a person to completely rid himself of these bad influences. Many consulting companies offer business development courses, seminars or help sessions which address this issue in great detail. With a little time, dedication and encouragement, if possible, anyone can abandon procrastination and push their proficiency at work to the maximum.

Cubes for Contract Seating

Upholstered poufs or cube seating is the perfect solution to providing inexpensive and practical seating capacity at events, exhibitions and retail environments. You will rarely pass a shoe shop without seeing an arrangement of cubes within. Public houses, bars and restaurants rely on their adaptability for seating and cubes provide ready, comfortable seats in office reception areas. They are easy to store, each one coming in a tight fitting double walled card board box and if cared for will give you a life span of many years service. How then can such a simple piece of furniture offer so much too so many for so little?

Reputable footstools and ottoman suppliers regard the cube as a required piece within their furniture stores. Cubes fit into the smallest of spaces and can be arranged in any variety of combinations. A craftsman built cube offers a genuine measure of quality. The template is its hard wood frame, glued rather than screwed, stapled or nailed. A two to three inch deep rigid foam pad beneath a plywood structure provides the comport for seating and a protective foam and polyester wadding offers protection to the edges and sides. Four plastic glide feet are applied to the base so as to avoid scuffing and tears to the edges at floor level. The glides also provide stability and balance allied to simple maneuverability across surfaces.

The choice of outer covering should be dictated by where and for what purpose the cube is to be used. For instance cubes that provide seating in bars and restaurants require a hard wearing outer upholstered surface that is easy to clean. Light colors should be avoided as they are prone to staining. Dark fabrics should not be exposed to direct sunlight. That said the choice of beauticians and hairdressers is for “lighter” upholstered cubes in shades such as whites or gelds.

The brand image you are trying to portray is essential to your choice of cube. Wedding event organizers tend to select white leather cubes to enhance the atmosphere of the occasion. Many bar owners choose reds or black as their design color and their cube seating selection is reflected accordingly. Leather or faux leather tends to be their upholstery choice as it is a practical solution for the club or bar environment.

If treated appropriately your cube will last you for many years. Fabrics treated with a Guardsman* stain resist finish (such as faux suede) may be wiped clean with a damp cloth to remove excessive stains and soiling. Upholstered leather cubes, particularly those in an aged Mustang leather look better with age and can last for up to ten years! If you are looking to buy seating for your business or home then a cube offers you a quality solution at a price to suit!

Boeing’s R and D Project for an Ultra Endurance UAV Pays Off!

The Boeing company being the innovative company that it is, has invested in very interesting project. They have taken it upon themselves to develop a new high altitude ultra long range unmanned aerial vehicle platform for surveillance. This platform can be used for both military and commercial operations. It might also save our next in the event of a major disruption in satellite communication.

A recent article in Forbes, in the aerospace news section entitled: “Boeing gets $89.3 million military contract” which originated on the Associated Press on September 15, 2010 tells it all, in case you are not familiar with any of this.

Indeed this is a very good use of Defense Funds, and Boeing’s newest ultra-endurance type UAV is potentially a huge game changer, it is a perfect platform in case of Electronic Attack of satellites, or a massive Solar Storm or Flares that take out our satellites. Remember if they go everything changes, life as we know it, everything from using your credit cards at retailers, gas pumps, etc.

No satellite radio, TV, overseas communication curtailed to a large extent, really problematic. Such an unmanned system by Boeing could save our necks, literally, so, kudos goes to Team Boeing, and to our DOD for recognizing the obvious and funding this project. YES, I am very serious about this one.

Can you even imagine if one-day, all of humanity lost all satellite communication – ouch! I mean, double Ouchy-wow-wow. That would be a day to remember, when all of modern technology basically came to a crawl. And worst of all, it could happen, as many of our satellite assets will not survive a severe solar storm, like the one which was documented in the 1800s – it happened before, and who is to say the next one wouldn’t be worse?

Well, in this case The Boeing Company can merely launch a 1,000 of these units and the next day, we’d be up and running. Business continuity is paramount and mankind’s biggest governments and biggest corporations need these types of assets ready to go and deployable within 24-48 hours to prevent long-term chaos from such a disruption.

We cannot merely lay-down and die or go into crisis mode every time there is a disruption, whether it be an electronic-impulse attack in space, a purposeful downing of US satellites, or the solar flare from hell. We need several locations with 1000s of these Boeing unmanned aerial systems, pre-configured, paid-for, and ready to go. This can be done.

Corporations and governments already have back-up plans in their IT departments, and these satellites are key infrastructure to that communication system. Companies and governments operate globally, we are connected, and we cannot afford disruptions. Please consider all this, as our think tank is, and we have a plan.

Toxic Conflict between Colleagues?

Conflict between colleagues can create a toxic environment. The atmosphere is divisive, obstructive and emotionally destructive. No business/team will perform effectively or achieve its goals while a conflict remains between team members. The costs associated with colleague conflict can be difficult to quantify and it is unfortunately the case that sometime the true cost only comes to light when the protagonist leaves the team.

One option is to consider a formal mediation process. This may be available internally or you may have to bring in trained mediation experts. Mediation is proven to be very effective and create long-term improvement.

Sometimes as a manger you may identify that a certain individual is experiencing difficulties because of their attitude and behaviors. When this is the case it is often beneficial to work with the individual rather than involving the whole team. This approach works well in a ‘coaching’ style interaction preferably facilitated by a trained expert who is outside the immediate team.

John, (name changed to protect identity) who is a senior manager in large architectural company has recently experienced a similar set of circumstances. Two senior colleagues who have very different styles of working have become increasingly antagonistic towards each other. Some examples of how these two people behave would be quite amusing,(like small children in the play ground) if the reality was not so serious; failing/refusing to pass on messages, not sitting next to each other in meetings, inappropriate replies to e-mails, over critical of professional creativity and corralling colleague support.

John became increasingly frustrated by the situation despite various attempts to address the situation both with individuals and by talking to them together. He involved HR in an advisory capacity and the two people involved began to consider filing an official grievance both against each other and against John. Based on John’s observations and discussions he realized that the conflict was mainly caused by Chris and so he began to research other methods of dealing with the situation before using the last resort of taking formal disciplinary action.

Remote conflict coaching seemed to provide a different approach that would enable Chris to discuss the situation with an independent advisor. Someone she could share her frustrations with and their drivers; more importantly someone who would unpack the conflict and provide a range of practical solutions. The coaching environment worked by weekly contact. The contact provides accountability coaching and attitude checks.
